David W. Matula, the initial Cruse C. and Marjorie F. Calahan Centennial Chair in Engineering at SMU Lyle School of Engineering, joined the SMU faculty in 1974 after earning a B.S. degree at Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. degree at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department from 1974-1979. His research focuses on the foundations and applications of algorithm engineering, specifically on computer arithmetic and graph/network algorithms, and includes co-authorship of a 600-page book on the mathematical foundations of computer arithmetic (Cambridge University Press, 2010). He has published more than 125 scholarly articles, the top five of which have received more than 1600 citations. He has supervised 20 doctoral students, and has served as a distinguished visiting professor or research scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and at Stanford University, and internationally in Germany, Denmark and France. Prior to SMU, he was associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis. For more than 25 years, Professor Matula's research was supported by the National Science Foundation, Cyrix Corp., Texas Instruments and SRC, Inc., among others. He has given keynotes at national and international conferences, and holds 21 U.S. patents. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Engineering.
